We should think in terms of microbes being good when they are in the right environment, for example, there is no necessity to attempt to attenuate e Coli when it is happily thriving and contributing to the well-being of its host in the human gut.

However, e Coli on the hands or hard surfaces that come into contact with a sandwich is an entirely different proposition; it becomes bad when it is in the wrong environment.
